Elopement Wedding Dress For Mature Bride

pretty made to measure elopement wedding dress older mature bride

I created an elopement wedding dress for this stunning mature bride, made in pale peachy pink silk satin with incredible beaded and applique tulle overlay. Silk chiffon flowers with bold colour print, pearls and glass beads fade from neckline to hem.

The shape was simple and flattering, a column dress with round neckline, cap sleeves and puddle train. I hinted at the waistline with a line of tiny beads and we included a dipped back neckline to show off her beautiful skin.

This client was one of those most rare and wonderful creatures in the wedding industry – a repeat customer. She first came to me for help with her daughter’s wedding outfit. When her own wedding plans became reality I was flattered that she thought of me again.

This wedding was featured on English Wedding blog – have a read if you want to learn more about the details of the day.

“Felicity, I could just burst with excitement. I can’t believe I have the most beautiful gown in the world…THANK YOU!”

Knowing that my bride is enjoying her wedding day wearing a gown she loves makes my heart sing every time.

Making an Elopement Wedding Dress for a Mature Bride

At the beginning of this design process, we started with one set of designs. We got as far as the ‘toile’ (practice run) but wedding plans were deferred (eugh, covid). With extra time on her hands, the bride researched ideas more and changed her mind on the style she wanted.

So together we came up with a new design. I made a new toile and in July, as restrictions eased, we finally got to meet for in-person fittings and powered through to the September wedding date. That didn’t give me a huge amount of time, but I thrive on a deadline, and everything was more than ready by the time the big day came around.

Here’s the finished dress on the stand, before the bride came to pick it up. Isn’t that 3D floral fabric absolutely beautiful?

“You were such an amazing part of the planning and obviously the day. I can’t bare to put my dress away. It’s still hanging in its bag in our room.”

I think it’s the little details that make all the difference. When it came to finishing this dress, I felt that the look couldn’t be complete without adding some of the lace from the dress onto the shoes. I made sure the placement of flowers worked with the shape of the shoes to create a visually pleasing flow. After pinning and re-pinning a few times, I was happy and sewed them on, adding a few pearls as well.

The final touch was a sweet little drawstring bag that I also made to match the dress and shoes.

Working with this bride was as much fun as her incredible wedding photos imply. Although we had to turn around within a matter of weeks, it was an honour to be able to provide her bespoke gown for her special day. I’m so glad she decided to go ahead with the wedding despite what the world had thrown at us during those dark days of covid.

Destination Vegas. Rockabilly bride. Halloween vibes.
Sounds like the perfect wedding.

Gorgeous goth Ellie got married in Las Vegas on Halloween. She wanted something alternative, retro and a little spooky. She realised she was never going to find that with an off-the-rack wedding dress. That's where I came in.

I designed and made her white and purple wedding dress with a wonderful blend of 1950’s and 90's shapes, modern styling and subtle Halloween Vixen detail. Harkening back to when Halloween was a little more stylish - perfect for this gothic bombshell. Below the boned bodice, I ruched and layered white satin over sumptuous shot black/purple taffeta and layers and layers of white net. The white satin was spangled all over with hand sewn crystals, ready to sparkle under the Vegas lights.

My favourite detail? The hand beaded spider web made from Swarovski crystals. Spooky but subtle.
As a seamstress there are certain things that give me the ick. Usually they're pretty specific and unless you're also a dressmaker it might be something you're completely unaware of.

I've always had a ‘thing’ about language generally. I find it really interesting. I've noticed how strong a reaction I can have to people using language differently to what I’m used to. And when I notice that I often go on a bit of a deep dive to understand where that difference stems from. I think coming from a historical costuming background also means I love to know the history of things (and despite my instinctive language-conservative leanings, I do actively work on being accepting and open minded, trying celebrate the differences).

That said, please don’t say your dress has a trail!
