Floral Pink Plus Size Wedding Dress

custom bespoke Floral Pink Plus Size Wedding Dress flower arch orange cream cerise fuchsia princess bride

For her wedding day, Katie wanted a feminine and floaty dress in layers of tulle and floral lace. And what a dress it turned out to be! It’s such a romantic wedding look, fit for a fantasy princess.

The dress was made from layered silk dupion (one of my favourite fabrics to work with), rose pink tulle and embroidered floral tulle beset with roses. We choose a wide neckline and princess puff sleeves, decorated with an adorably tiny tulle frill. And the back has gorgeous lace up detailing, along with a big, statement bow.

And check out that dramatic skirt swoosh!

Making a Floral Pink Plus Size Wedding Dress

This is the original design that I sent to Katie after our initial consultation. As is often the case, throughout the course of the fittings, Katie and I made changes to make sure her dress was completely to her liking. You’ll notice this especially with the sleeves, which started out as draped tulle and became sweet puff sleeves later one.

The first fitting is where the bride tries of the toile – a rough draft of the pattern, in an inexpensive material. It’s to make sure the fit is right and the overall shapes are what we’re aiming for, before I cut into the more expensive fabrics.

During the next fitting we made the decision about changing the sleeve type. And talked about the big, dramatic bow planned. The skirt was cut very full in layers of tulle over silk dupion and, most importantly, it has pockets!

And here is the dress during one of the final fittings. I still had a few little things left to sew (hence the pins that you might be able to spot). I also attached clear poppers so that the bow could be attached once the bride had been laced into the corseted bodice.

One of the last details was the embroidered tulle – hand finished to create a fade up the skirt, giving it a more organic feel. It’s tiny additions like this that really make a dress feel bespoke.

A Dress Fit For a Princess

This is the kind of wedding dress I love to make. It says so much about Katie – about her whimsy, her love of colour and nature. You can see that she likes fantasy and romance and history. All of that, and more!

After I finished making the dress, I realised I’d been undeniably inspired by the outfits of Penelope Featherington from Bridgerton. I love how much fun the designers from the show clearly had making those costumes. They’re fun, exciting and look gorgeous on screen. Especially Penelope’s. Her style throughout the series is always vibrant and often with floral motifs.

Even though the wedding dress I made doesn’t have many obvious regency elements, I think the spirit of Penelope is still there. And all those words I’d use to describe Penelope, I would also use to describe the bride, Katie 🥰.

If you’re looking for a dress made exactly to suit your body, your style and your personality, then book a no-obligation consultation with me.

If you’re a plus size bride looking for more beautiful wedding dress inspiration, have a peep at this starry reception dress. And for a blush pink dress with a theatrical flare, this one should be right up your street.

“My detachable skirt was the best. So many people were very impressed with your work. Thank you so very much, I LOVE MY SKIRT!”

For real bride Christina, I created one of my iconic dip dye overskirts. Christina went for a beautiful monochromatic ombre, going from bright sky blue, all the way down to a deep, rich navy.

Whether it's matching your bouquet, your groom's pocket square or your bridesmaids, having an overskirt really helps tie the colour palette of wedding together.

If you want to add some colour to your wedding, but don't quite feel brave enough to dye directly onto your wedding dress, then a dip dye overskirt is the perfect solution. Have a look at my Etsy (link in the bio) to find out more.

What colours would you pick?
Sometimes dressmaking lingo can feel a bit overwhelming, so I like to spend time breaking down various elements of a wedding dress I've made in... Anatomy of a Dress!

▫️for the fabric I used a beautiful, ivory floral lace (layered on top of silk dupion)

▫️the back of dress has a keyhole opening, secured with covered buttons at the top

▫️the corset bodice is fully boned with visible boning channels

▫️the dress fastens with a lace-up back, with ribbon and eyelets, and a modesty panel behind (so no skin shows through beneath the lacing)

▫️the skirt is cut straight with a very slight flare near the hem and scalloped edging used all around, including onto the small train

Did you find this little breakdown helpful? Hopefully it means that when it comes to your bridal outfit, you have a better idea of how to talk about what you want 🥰
